I was listening to the Michael DelGiorno show on Super Talk 99.7 in Nashville yesterday. A gentleman named Kevin called into the show to help explain some of the hardships of being homeless, and to try and debunk the common perception that all homeless people are drug attics and drunks. Kevin explained that he had no family to speak of and was injured last summer moving furniture. Kevin is a 50 year old mover by trade that felt he was too old to find a job in his chosen profession. Kevin's financial situation deteriorated to the point that he was no longer able to afford rent. Kevin now lives in his car with his three K-9 companions.

I called into the radio show and offered Kevin an opportunity to submit an application for my consideration. My best driver is 50 years old. Real movers know how to work smart. Charlie Brown taught me that 10 years ago. My mentor in the art of loading and unloading was 72 years old and moved an upright piano like an 20 year old.

I pray Kevin returns to a life of stability.

AMSA Kicks off 2008 Moving Season with Innovative ProMoverSM Program

ORLANDO. Fla. -- The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) today launched the 2008 moving season with the unveiling of ProMoverSM – an innovative new program designed to protect consumers and help ensure they are hiring a legitimate, professional mover when they need to move their belongings.
The ProMoverSM program seeks to put an end to the small but devastating problem of so-called “rogue movers”—criminals who pose as legitimate movers to rip off consumers – with a comprehensive program of pre-screening, annual reviews and a strict revocation process for movers who don’t maintain the program’s high standards. The ProMoverSM designation will represent a new standard for professionalism and excellence and a “must have” credential to be identified as a trusted, professional mover.
“The fact is, ‘rogue movers’ is a terrible misnomer,” said AMSA President and CEO Linda Darr. “These are thieves—plain and simple—who tarnish the image of the professional moving industry and raise consumers’ anxiety levels at a very stressful time in their lives. It is our hope that through the ProMoverSM program we may someday put an end to this preventable problem.”
When the program is fully implemented, consumers will see the ProMoverSM logo on the web sites, advertising and marketing materials of moving companies from coast to coast. They will be able to visit AMSA’s web site www.moving.org to view a list of current ProMoverSM professionals. In addition, they will be able to report complaints through a new toll free number and a dedicated e-mail address.
“The ProMoverSM logo means that you are dealing with a professional mover,” Darr said. “It’s an easy message for consumers to understand and a distinctive service mark for people to seek out when they’re planning their move.”
ProMoverSM certification will be a requirement for AMSA membership. All AMSA members will be ProMoverSM and all ProMoverSM will be AMSA members.
To become a ProMoverSM, new applicants—including all current AMSA members—will be screened for any applicable state and federal felony convictions and to verify compliance with state incorporation laws and they must sign an agreement pledging compliance with applicable state and federal laws and AMSA’s Code of Ethics. AMSA will also review every ProMoverSM moving company on an annual basis to ensure that they are maintaining the programs’ high industry standards. Movers who fail to live up to the new rigid requirements will be expelled from membership and be stripped of their ProMoverSM designation.
AMSA, working with its members, industry partners, federal and state regulators and other stakeholders, is currently reviewing and finalizing all aspects of this major new initiative with initial screenings beginning this fall and full program implementation by Jan. 1, 2009.
“It’s hard to quantify the extent of the so-called ‘rogue mover’ problem because local law enforcement often treat these situations as contract disputes,” Darr added. “But we do know that the overwhelming majority of all moves in this country are conducted by legitimate moving companies. And now, with the implementation of the ProMoverSM program, American consumers can be confident that the moving company they hire will be honest, accountable and professional.”

Diesel about to hit $4 a gallon in Nashville

Average diesel prices were flirting with the $4 a gallon mark in Nashville this morning.The latest
AAA fuel price survey shows diesel selling for $3.995 a gallon at truck stops and gas stations here.Truckers, particularly those who own independent rigs, have said soaring fuel prices make it difficult to continue operations.

Diesel is at an all-time high in Nashville and nationally. The national average price for diesel is $4.13 a gallon today, up 40 percent from a year ago.Average gasoline prices also continue to increase, hitting record highs of $3.40 a gallon today nationally and $3.265 a gallon at the pumps in Nashville.

Rising fuel prices here come as oil prices surged to record highs on world markets as the weakening U.S. dollar drives up investments in commodities.Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose as high as $114.53 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Tuesday.

Analysts said growing investor demand for commodities — which have performed better than other financial instruments — serve to prop up prices.

I was given the opportunity to move NFL football player Ben Hartsock today. Once a Tennessee Titan, Ben is now moving to Atlanta to play with the Falcons.
